Prompt Training Class Requirements

Speech Pathologists are the only professionals with the prerequisite knowledge to apply PROMPT in the holistic manner in which it is intended to be used. Therefore, only Speech Pathologists are trained fully to provide PROMPT therapy.

To become fully trained in PROMPT, a clinician must complete four essential steps to be able to fully understand the PROMPT technique and apply it appropriately to patients. These steps are as follow::

1. Introduction to PROMPT: Technique*
This 3 day intensive workshop focuses on teaching the technique of PROMPT. The training consists of a hands-on, tactile-kinesethic-proprioceptive input method with an emphasis on the need for integration into a holistic therapy approach. Due to the hands-on nature of this course a maximum of 22 participants are allowed. Please note that due to the hands-on training for this workshop, attendees cannot have long fingernails when taking it.

2. Bridging PROMPT: Technique to Intervention*
This intenesive 3 day course can be taken 3 months or more after the initial Intorduction course. Clinicians will learn more about the technique of PROMPT, but also focuses on setting appropriate goals and objectives for the individual within the PROMPT framework. This training assists clinicians to enable therapy to be incorporated across a range of settings, including the home environment, while maintaining a focus on the key needs for the individual to assist them to develop to their potential. The goal is to develop the best communication outcomes for individuals in PROMPT treatment. Due to the hands on nature of this course, there is a maximum of 24 participants that can attend.

3. The PROMPT Technique Self Study Project
This project was developed for practicing Speech-Language clinicians to help support their learning of PROMPT Technique and provide direct suggestions about assessing, selecting targets and executing a PROMPT focused treatment plan with a particular patient. This project must be completed before applying for PROMPT Certification and feedback is provided to the clinician by a PROMPT Certified Instructor.

4. PROMPT Certification: A Self Study Project
This intensive self study is a 4-month study of one client that the clinician is presently treating. The clinician is expected to provide a detailed assessment of the client’s global domains and the development of a holistic intervention plan. This plan includes the identification of priorities identified on the Motor Speech Hierarchy using the System Analysis Observation to select motor phonemes (sounds) for developing words and phrases. The sound, word and phrase lexicons are then incorporated into functional communication activities. Parent/caregiver strategies and goals are developed. This project is scored by a PROMPT Certified Instructor and can be applied for a year or more after the completion of the Bridging course.

It is only after completion of all 4 of these trainings that a clinician is considered to be a PROMPT Certified Clinician and is allowed to add PC to her credentials. The PC credential is fully recognized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

*All PROMPT workshops are small and learning is primarily "hands-on". The instructor, participant ratio is no more than 1-14 and requires that each participant be "prompted" or helped directly by the instructor(s).

About the PROMPT Instructors

In order to become a Certified PROMPT Instructor, clinicians must first complete all levels of PROMPT Training to become certified. Additionally, clinicians must display additional efforts for pursuit of training by assisting in workshops, teaching parent courses, presenting to parent groups or any other workshop that helps others to better understand the PROMPT Technique. It is only then, and through recommendation by another Certified PROMPT Instructor, that a Certified PROMPT Therapist may be considered by the board to begin a 6 month home study program. Upon completing home study, the clinician undergoes an intensive week long training period. Once completed, the therapist is evaluated and awarded the Certified PROMPT Instructor (CPI) credentials.
